More Summer fun from WITC!

WITC in Barnes and Drummond had a successful winter and spring thanks to all who came out for the fun and learning. Or -- came out to teach!

This summer John Kudlas will be teaching the following classes:

CANOE BRULE II

Paddle the placid meadow-like middle section of the Brule River among the majestic pine, ash, maple, birch, spruce and balsam. This is the flat water section from US Hwy 2 to Pine Tree Landing. Stops will be made to survey macroinvertebrates and aquatic plants. Equipment will be provided by Canoes On Wheels (COW). Please bring a lunch and raingear.

July 14h
Meet at Barnes Community Church at 11:00 am.

CANOE THE WHITE RIVER

Paddle the upper reaches of the serpentine White River near Grandview. There aren’t many rapids, but it is a lovely canoe trek among the Spotted Alders. The group will also survey aquatic plants, especially watching for Aquatic Invasive Species, and collecting water quality data. Equipment will be provided by Canoes on Wheels (COW). The group will stop at Delta Diner after the paddle for lunch. Please bring raingear in case of rain.

CANOE UPPER NAMEKAGON

Paddle the river the native Americans paddled for hundreds of years before Radisson, Groseillers, Carver and other explorers in the 1600’s and 1700’s. Then the lumberjacks came in the 1800’s to run logs down the river. This is an easy section of river to run, but exciting and beautiful. Equipment will be provided by Canoes on Wheels (COW). Please bring a lunch and raingear.

CANOE HISTORY AND CHALLENGES

This will be the culmination of the summer’s canoeing activities. The day will include a visit from a local resident, Jack Gribble, who has researched and constructed several original birch bark canoes. John Kudlas will also show slides of his Hayes River to Hudson Bay whitewater canoe expedition. We will have a picnic lunch and a time to discuss this year’s canoeing experiences and proposals for next year’s canoeing program.
