December 18, 2006 MeetingEWM Committee meeting Monday, December 18, 2006 6:30 p.m. Barnes Town Hall Ingemar Ekstrom called the meeting to order. Present were: Ingemar Ekstrom, Mitch McGee, Pam Toshner, Lee Wiesner, John Kudlas, Barb Romstad Agenda items: 1. Minutes from the November 20, 2006 - Barb Romstad Minutes from the last meeting were reviewed. Lee Wiesner made a motion to approve the minutes; motion seconded by Mitch McGee; passed. 2. Progress of the Clean Boats, Clean Waters grant Lee Wiesner In preparation for the grant request the group has prepared an estimated cost of hiring labor to monitor the boat landings. Lee presented a tentative schedule for manning the boat landings with paid labor in 2007. He estimated there would be 52 8-hour shifts covering all weekends from the opening of fishing through labor day plus major holidays. The plan to hire personnel to cover the 3 the major boat landings on the Eau Claire Chain and a coordinator to manage the workers and monitor additional landings in the area would cost approximately $20,000. John Kudlas will be providing the verbiage for justifying the position of the coordinator to the grant committee for their inclusion in the boat landing monitoring plan. . The Town of Barnes set aside $25,000 for the EWM project in 2006. That money has been rolled over into 2007 since it was not used in 2006. Lee has approached the Eau Claire Lakes Conservation Club and asked them to author a letter in support of the EWM grant. John Kudlas will secure a similar letter from Potawatomi Property Owners; Ingemar will secure letters from the towns of Gordon and Highland. These letters are part of the grant application. 3. Survey results Ingemar Ekstrom Response is up to 75% with the same overall tone from people who have replied. 4. DNR and Corps of Engineers meeting Pam Toshner Pam Toshner will be meeting with the DNR and Corps of Engineers in Madison tomorrow, December 19, 2006. They will be discussing the following points regarding Sandbar and Tomahawk Lakes. a. What would be an appropriate study/management design for these lakes? b. How best to get it done (who, what, how to pay for it, etc.) c. When could it occur, given that there have been two baseline surveys done on the lakes in the past 2 summers.
5. WAL article for Laketides John Kudlas John distributed copies of the article he contributed to the WAL newsletter. He will be making a presentation about the Barnes EWM project at the Wisconsin Lakes Convention in Green Bay on April 26-28, 2007. 6. Letter to Sandbar and Tomahawk Property Owners Ingemar Barb will format Pattis letter to print on Town of Barnes letterhead. She will bring the file to the town hall on Wednesday morning at 8:30 am for output. 7. Committee Statement of Purpose Ingemar Ingemar distributed a brochure from Vilas County that outlines the purpose and role of the EWM committee. He feels we should consider developing a statement of purpose for the committee so it is clear to the community. Some discussion followed concerning expanding the purpose of the group to be the environmental team. 8. Next Meeting date Monday January 15, 2007 Barnes Town Hall, 6:30 pm New Business John presented a letter from a St.Olaf student who expressed an interest in the area environment issues.
