MINUTES OF THE BARNES AREA HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION MEETING

OF AUGUST 18, 2005

Members present: Claudia Draganowski, Judi Scholz, Dave Pease, Mike Bowes, George Martin, Quentin Ruprecht, Linda Oberstar, Bob Oberstar, Paul Skamser and Judy Neider.

The meeting was called to order by President Claudia Draganowski at 9:10AM.

Claudia introduced new member Paul Skamser from Superior.

There was discussion of the election of officers for 2006. Present officers indicated that they do not wish to seek re-nomination.

It was suggested that there should be a list of potential officers presented at the September meeting. Several members expressed interest in the available offices and will confirm their intentions at that meeting.

Dave Pease, as BAHA’s representative to the Bayfield County Historical Society, said that BAHA must pay dues to that organization in the next month. The amounts are as follows: $2.50 per membership (13 Annual) and $25.00 for one Lifetime membership (a one time fee to Bayfield). The total owed will be $57.50. BAHA must also submit an “Annual Report” summarizing accomplishments and activities during 2005.

A motion was made by Quentin Ruprecht to pay dues to Bayfield County Historical Society and submit an Annual Report by September. Claudia Draganowski seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Dave Pease will take this information to the September meeting of the Bayfield County Historical Society.

Mike Bowes reported that at this time, there is $33,796.82 in the BAHA account. This figure does not reflect the expenses to be paid for the Historical book.

There was a brief discussion of what to do with the assets that are earmarked for the museum-should a portion be invested and how?

Linda Oberstar reported that the books will be ready in early September so that they can be distributed and sold during the Labor Day weekend. Linda met with the publisher prior to printing and concurred with his recommendation that pages be done in a satin finish rather than glossy. White Birch in Hayward is the publisher for the Barnes historical book.

At this time there are exactly 293 books that have been purchased and it is hoped that the majority of these can be distributed during the Labor Day weekend. This is also an opportunity to sell additional copies and promote a membership drive for BAHA. It was suggested that buttons and history / tour guides left over from the Centennial celebration be offered as incentives to book purchases and pickup and also membership in BAHA.

The schedule for this Labor Day event, “Barnes Centennial Book Distribution”, is as follows:

Saturday, September 3: 9:00AM-12:00Noon

Sunday: September 4: 11:00AM-2:00PM

The question of storage of Centennial items left over from the celebration was raised. The Town Hall does not have enough room for much of this, although the BAHA file cabinet that is presently there could remain. However, it is desirable to keep all Barnes Centennial and historical information in one location. This issue will be discussed further.

The agenda of the next meeting will focus on the availability and election of officers.

The next meeting will be September 15, 2005 at 9:00AM at Downtown Barnes.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:45AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Judy Neider- Secretary
